Candidiasis / Thrush

Candida is a fungus in the body that is normal in small amounts. However when there is an overgrowth, it results in Candidiasis or thrush. Also known as a "yeast" infection, Candidiasis usually involves a vaginal discharge. Since vaginal discharge may also be caused by a cervical infection with  chlamydia or gonorrhoea, it is necessary to be seen by a sexual health clinician to diagnose the cause of the discharge.

HOW DO YOU GET IT?

Candidiasis is not a sexually transmitted infection.

Nearly 75% of all women will have one episode of genital Candidiasis in their lifetime.

Factors that might increase the risk for developing thrush include:

• the use of irritant or perfumed soaps and shower gels
• being on antibiotics
• having a chronic illness (such as diabetes or anaemia)
• pregnancy

SYMPTOMS

Most people (80-90%) with Candidiasis will be experiencing symptoms. These will most likely include:

• a thick white discharge (however, not usually odourous)
• itchy and sore vulva
• swollen vulva

RECURRENT CANDIDA

In some women, where treatment is not effective, it can lead to recurring bouts of thrush. This is called recurrent candida. In this case, it might be suggested that you use the treatments (topical or tablets) for longer than usual or to use a maintenance treatment. This will be further discussed in your consultation. In recurrent thrush, it may be recommended that your partner be examined and treated if necessary.
