Dr Simon Barton

Simon Barton graduated from Charing Cross Hospital Medical School in 1982, and initially trained in obstetrics and gynaecology in London obtaining his MRCOG in 1987. He has also worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in the GU Medicine clinic where he first published research studies on the treatment of Herpes Simplex Virus and the epidemiology of HIV in 1984.

After completing his obstetrics and gynaecology training, and an MD thesis on the effect of cigarette smoking and HPV infection on the immunology of the cervix, he took up post as a senior registrar in HIV and Genitourinary Medicine at St. Stephen’s Centre, becoming a consultant at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital in 1990. He has been Clinical Director of this world-renowned unit since 1996.

Dr. Barton was elected President of the British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) (2006-2008), and has chaired the Royal College of Physician’s Joint Specialty Committee in Genitourinary Medicine. He has represented the UK on the Board of the European Academy of Dermatovenereology (EADV), and the International Union against Sexually Transmitted Infections (IUSTI).

His current research interests include the development of a vaccine against HSV infection; finding optimal treatment for the management of genital warts; defining the clinical approach to the treatment of genital pain syndrome.
