Vasectomy

A vasectomy is a very effective and simple method of contraception. It is sometimes known as 'male sterilisation'. It is considered a permanent form of contraception. However if you decide to have children later in life, or if you meet a new partner who wants to have children with you, you may want the vasectomy reversed, which is possible.

After a vasectomy, sperm can no longer exit the body from a man's penis during ejaculation. They are broken down and absorbed by the body. In men who have not had a vasectomy, the sperm fluid only contribute to about 10% of the ejaculation fluid, so a vasectomy does not significantly affect the appearance, smell or flavor of the ejaculate. It is a quick and painless surgical procedure which is usually carried out under local anaesthetic. This means that in most cases you will be able to return home the same day as your procedure.

Following a vasectomy, most men experience some mild pain and discomfort. However, this usually passes within a few days. After the procedure, you should be able to drive and return to work within 1-2 days.
