This surgical termination of pregnancy (STOP) method is offered if you are over nine weeks gestation, by request if under nine weeks and if you are medically unsuitable for a medical termination. Surgical abortions are available for up to 19 weeks pregnancy.
You will be seen for an initial consultation and counselling by Mr Michael Stafford at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, Fulham Road, Chelsea, where you will have a scan, an infection screen and blood tests.
The surgical abortion procedure requires a half-day admission to the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London. You will be given a light general anaesthetic for the procedure. The procedure takes approximately 10 minutes however you may be required to remain at the hospital for a couple of hours afterwards. Patients can experience some discomfort, similar to heavy period pains however they don’t tend to last long.
A full explanation of the effects of the operation will be given and Mr Stafford will be readily available for advice before and after the surgical abortion procedure. The advantage of having the procedure at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital over some other centres is that there is a very high level of back up, should it be required. The procedure is generally very safe, however, in the very rare case of further input being necessary the hospital has full surgical, medical and anaesthetic back up. As well as an Intensive Care Unit and facilities for an overnight stay.
The fee for the surgical abortion procedure is tailored to an individual's needs and a package price can be arranged if requested. A follow-up visit is included in the price.
